Spencer Monks' Reserve Ale is a classic Trappist Quadruple ("Quad") in the Belgian tradition. This Quad is fragrant, robust and full-bodied, mahogany in color and crowned with a dense, tan, frothy head. Its malt-forward profile yields to a warm finish.

Medium, tan head, stable over deep dark brown-mahogany beer with Bordeaux highlights. Chocolate, undergrowth; sweet, but also dry wood, bit pineneedles - again dried. Dark candi sugar, alcohol. Bitter-sweetish, but with a quite dry finish, featuring liquorice. Raisins, without their sweetness, again wood, dry-ish, well-attenuated, it would seem. Dry, hence not really viscous or utterly full-bodied, but chewy and rounded enough. Medium to good carbonation. Ah! A "quadrupel" that managed to evade syrupiness. Good!

Poured from bottle mahogany with a lasting tan head. Aroma is dark fruit malt leather. Taste is fig toffee burnt caramel roasty malt. Does not drink like its 10% abv. After 1/2 half a glass I am feeling toasty.

Storng raisin and plum aroma. Some leather and smoke. Tastes almost like a smoother dubbel. Pours near black with decent head and lacing. Fairly clean finish with a hint of bark. Tap at Sovereign.

Draft at The Sovereign. Poured a hazy, kind of dark plum wine color, ruby red edges, but also pretty dark. Aroma was dried plums. Light chocolate. Toffee, with some light yeasty funky notes to it. Light wheat. Some coffee bitterness on the finish. Pretty complex. Really a nice Quad.

Dark chestnut with a lasting off-white head. Rich malty aroma with sourdough bread, biscuit and grain, along with dark sugar, dried fruit and a touch of bubblegum. Sweet malty flavour with hints of caramel and dark sugar, even a bit of licorice. A rather malt forward quadrupel, but with good complexity. Sadly, my first/only trappist beer from outside of Belgium/La Trappe that's worthy of the logo.

Bottle at Marktzicht. Aroma and taste of a typical quad, sweet, malty, with some ripe fruit and herbs. Not very interesting and way too expensive. Also not bad though.

Bottle. Deep murky, nearly opaque sanguine body, medium clumping tan head. Aroma of toffee, grape/red wine, and caramelized sugars, with peppery esters and wisps of alcohol. Body initially soft, dusty, then spicy/peppery/leathery with tannic fruitskin and toffee. Happily no syrupy heaviness, but a tad hot and bitter.
