This dark pilsner has, over the years, become a clear sign that Christmas is upon us. The annual launch in Denmark, known as 'J-day', takes place the first Friday in November and is a day of celebration across Denmark. Carlsberg employees drive around in truck to visit bars and cafés while singing the traditional Tuborg Christmas Brew song and handing out free beer to the guests to mark the start of the festive season.
The beer itself is a bottom-fermented wiener beer brewed on lager, münchener and caramel malt, and added English liquorice. The beer is dark-golden with a fresh aroma of caramel, cereal, liquorice and blackcurrant.

33 cL bottle. Pours golden brown with a short lasting but somewhat creamy head. Has clear barley malt aroma. Taste is mainly barley malt with some sweetness and liquorice appears deeply hidden once the beer gets warmer. Short aftertaste.

Tried the beer from a 33cl can on January 21, 2006. I like my Christmas beers to be strong and have lots of taste, something this does not add up to. As for a non-Christmas beer then, I thought it was a bit "plain". The smell and taste of it did not really inspire me to get another one. The classic snowy label is nice, but other than that the beer is boring.3/2/4/3/6=1.8Had this plenty of times after when relatives closer to Denmark, though for some reason have never rerated it. A bit unfair from the early days since I didn’t put in much of a character description of the beer, nor gave it a score that I would if I had it today. From memory this is a classic pale lager, albeit with somewhat more character than the real cheap and boring ones, but malty, some DMS, fairly thin, not much to write home about. As for score, I’d give it a bit higher, upping that a tad and shall try to remember to rerate this next time I have it.4/2/4/2/8=2.0

Canned. Copperish amber colour, cramy mediumsized white head. Caramellish malty aroma. Sweetish malty dry flavour with hops kicking in finish (says licorace on can, maybe that’s the dry sourish thing, which reminds of hops). Dry palate too. Also some hints of barley in the flavour.

Clear amber brown color, decent off-white head. Grassy, a bit smokey malty nose. Malty start, ending bitterish with salty aftertaste - maybe that’s liquorice. Some grassy hops too. Not very Christmasy.

(Bottle 33 cl) Read some statistics last Christmas: I believe this beer has about 60-70% of the Danish market for Christmas beers. And nothing could be more unjustified. Lovely, dark amber colour with a fine creamy head. Very watery with a hint of caramel-malt and an idea of some hops. You don’t taste the added licorice. Extremely disappointing and very anonymous. If you have the choice, always grab a Carlsberg 47 instead of this crap. 081299
