This dark pilsner has, over the years, become a clear sign that Christmas is upon us. The annual launch in Denmark, known as 'J-day', takes place the first Friday in November and is a day of celebration across Denmark. Carlsberg employees drive around in truck to visit bars and cafés while singing the traditional Tuborg Christmas Brew song and handing out free beer to the guests to mark the start of the festive season.

The beer itself is a bottom-fermented wiener beer brewed on lager, münchener and caramel malt, and added English liquorice. The beer is dark-golden with a fresh aroma of caramel, cereal, liquorice and blackcurrant.

bottle, says, "Christmas brew." Pours light amber thin off white head. Toasted and biscuit malt aroma with honey notes. Sweet toasted malt, some bread and light yeast, ends sweet with a slight spice. Moderately carbonated, mouth is full bodied with a creamy texture.

Clear golden with a large off white head. Hints of malt in the aroma along with grainy notes. Sweet flavour with malty and caramel notes. Had a mild bitter finish but could definitely do with plenty of more hops. Cheap bastards....

2008 edition, bottle. appears clear amber, large thick white head. looks very nice. not much aroma i get caramel and malts, flavor is kinda weak, macro grains, reasonable hops, faint caramel. not much of an improvement on top of an ordinary tuborg or carlsberg. [4-4-4-3-9] 2010 edition, bottle. fresh. pours dark orange to brown, smooth offwhite head. 3 caramelly and faint hoppy aroma, sweet malts. more aroma than expected, also better aroma. 6 flavor is bitter caramelly, sweet malty, faint sweet hops. 6 palate is rather thick and smooth.4 overall not at all a bad christmas brew. i suspect they make different batches of this one, cause the one i had 2 years ago was a lot thinner. This one is at least as good as in the "old days" 20 or so years ago. [6-3-6-4-13] new rate:[5-4-5-3-11]

0.5 l bottle - Tuborg Christmas brew. Poured darker golden to light amber body with medium head. Sweet aroma of malts, of some artificial kind. Flavor is ugly sweet, but quite watery, blank, almost offensive. Some touch of metal and soapiness inside. Finish unpleasant, but not as much as the flavor. Maybe bad batch, I might re-rate it, pity it is in returnable bottles so I am lazy to buy it again, but it is so controversial beer here. Maybe because it is not original Danish, but licensed, with pull off-cap, but anyhow this what I’ve had is crap.

Can. Clear, golden beer with a beige head. Caramel and malt in aroma and flavor. Medium body. Some alcohol in the finish. Not much of a beer, but it is a typical Danish Christmas lager. (070608)

Tuborg Christmas Brew, 5.6%, from Carlsberg Serbia, imported here but seemingly not distributed at all by Carlsberg Croatia, courtesy of ozujsko (thanks !). Carlsberg Croatia started a big marketing campaign for this one. They had a huge promotion event in Zagreb, but what seemed odd was that only a bunch of bars/pubs there would be getting the beer. All of those put up posters advertising it. Soon enough it turned out that they wouldn’t be getting it at all. Don’t know what changed Carlsberg’s mind after going through all that. Religious differences between Croatia and Serbia ? That’d be just plain dumb... This poured a bronze colour with a tiny head that went away fast. Malty aroma with a weak touch of hops. Taste... ugh. Sweetish malty, weak sugar, soapiness. Flat and watery.. Weak weak weak acidity/hops in the aftertaste. The Serbian rendition of the Christmas Brew turned out to be worse than most regular Tuborgs I’ve tried.... heck, that 2-3 year old Classic had more life and taste in it than this. A shame, really. I hope to rerate this with a fresher sample (and preferably from Denmark). I believe (and hope) that the low quality of this was the reason it was never fully released, not some imagined fear of controversy.
