This beer debuted at Week of Logic 2024 under the alias “Between Subtle Shading and the Absence of Light,” from the first deciphered section of James Sanborn’s “Kryptos” sculpture at the CIA Headquarters.
With its mix of Morse code, ancient ciphers, and cryptographs, the final message of Sanborn’s sculpture remains elusive. Like the art piece, this liquid invites you to explore its depths like a multi-layered puzzle.
We’ve aged this English-style Barleywine in a selection of Heaven Hill bourbon casks with a combination of vanilla beans from Vanuatu and Comoros, then finished it with Mostra Coffee’s famed ‘Philippines Heritage’ coffee beans for coffee-derived layers of vanilla, baking spice, roasted nuts, and caramel.

16.9 oz. bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma is loaded with coffee, toffee, brown sugars, and a touch of vanilla. Flavour is extremely rich, with tons of vanilla and dark sugars, gentle bourbon, and subtle coffee. Very rich, heavily sweet but not cloying. Excellent

500ml (thx, Brian!) @ Salesforce. Appearance: dark copper with a beige head. Aroma: green peppers originated from coffee, vanilla, some figs and raisins, quite sweet. Taste: along the same lines. Almost no green peppers as they are getting covered by sweetness, vanilla, and dark fruits notes. Overall: good enough.

Poured from 500mL bottle (2024 release). Clear-ish dark mahogany brown with no head. Coffee, vanilla, feint green pepper and spice. Above average.

Amber-brown colour. No head. The aroma goes heavy on the coffee, jalapeño, some vanilla under there. On the palate, it’s vanilla. Coffee is more mellow, but there’s also some caramel. There’s a lot going on here, but the sugars help round it out compared with the harsh, chaotic aroma.

Clear orange brown beer, beige lacing. Aroma of vanilla, bourbon, caramel, strong dark malt. Taste of bourbon, vanilla some liquorice, ginger, toffee, boozy finish.

500ml bottle pours out dark cola brown topped with a tan head. Nose is nice sweet caramel malts some roast coffee bourbon barrel and vanilla. Taste is more of the nice sweet caramel malts some roast coffee that great bourbon barrel vanilla kick and some pitfruit.
