B/A Coffee Vanilla Barleywine
English-style Barleywine aged in bourbon barrels with Comoros and Vanuatu vanilla beans, finished with Mostra coffee
38°57'08"N 77°08'45"W
Viscometer 7
2024: Batch 001
(from label)
This beer debuted at Week of Logic 2024 under the alias “Between Subtle Shading and the Absence of Light,” from the first deciphered section of James Sanborn’s “Kryptos” sculpture at the CIA Headquarters.
With its mix of Morse code, ancient ciphers, and cryptographs, the final message of Sanborn’s sculpture remains elusive. Like the art piece, this liquid invites you to explore its depths like a multi-layered puzzle.
We’ve aged this English-style Barleywine in a selection of Heaven Hill bourbon casks with a combination of vanilla beans from Vanuatu and Comoros, then finished it with Mostra Coffee’s famed ‘Philippines Heritage’ coffee beans for coffee-derived layers of vanilla, baking spice, roasted nuts, and caramel.

Sampled from bottle at "Hooghe Noorden Tasting 2025". Dark brown to black color, virtually no head. Aroma is malts, coffee, espresso. Flavor is malts, soft roast, coffee, espresso, cocoa. Delicious. Lovely beer. A little less thick than I'd have expected up front but nonetheless, I love it.

Sweet and roasted dark malty with layers of chocolate and caramel, toffee, some coffee roast, burnt brown sugar, full body, dark malty bourbon streaked malty finish, touch of peppery spice in the close?

500 ml bottle. Aroma is bold coffee with a steady vanilla. Flavor is a soft “ light “ roasted coffee with the vanilla not being overpowering. Coffee has a soft fruity hint with an undertone of bitterness. It is sweet and bitter at the same time. Very unique!

Bottle shared by AirForceHops--thanks, Chris! Opaque cola brown with nice viscosity, thin ring of head and no lacing. Aroma is nice balance of oak, strong bourbon, vanilla, coffee. Taste is strong vanilla, caramel, bourbon, coffee. Smooth texture, medium bodied, average carbonation and finish as taste. Very nice balance, very smooth, and nice complexity. Duh--Bottle Logic!

Intense with coffee notes, some caramely toffee malts, vanilla, cocoa and hints of barrel notes. Malty and earthy, a bit unbalanced and weird.

500mL bottle. Pours brown with beige head. Aroma has hazelnut, vanilla, bourbon, some green pepper buried underneath. Flavour has hazelnut, vanilla, nice bready malts, tons of bourbon barrels. A bit of alcoholic burn. Rich mouthfeel. Very nice, adjuncts and barrels are well-incorporated.
