Jolly Roger himself smoked the malt for this Imperial Stout. This is a massive stout with a huge roasted maltiness and complex smoky, chocolate flavors coming through strong thanks to the gentle handpump and correct cellar temperature.

Note: ABV varies 9-10.4%.

RBESG08 grand tasting. Arr and stuff. Brown, almost black body. Tan head. Malty nose, not (word missing). Malty taste, somewhat roasty, ok but understated. Pales in comparison with the Kaggen I’ve had before it.

Tap at HDG - viscous black beer, with a thick tan lace - almost spicy, woody aroma, with some smoky, almost meaty notes to it - thick, oily mouthfeel - sweet up front, but some cocoa bitterness, alcohol, and mild spicy character squash it pretty fast - after that it becomes seriously smoky and almost woody, which I loooooved - I wish more impys used smoked malt.

This brew was brought to the fordest tasting (Jan, ’08) by wetherel and shared between fordest, padrefan98, toncatcher and of course wetherel. Thanks buddy.

Pours totally black with mocha head. The aroma is mild and a bit odd with hints of oxidation, roasty malts, some faint chocolate notes and licorice. I love the flavor. I get chocolate, coffee, roasted malts and hints of licorice. This is thick and rich and mildly warming. It has a very nice balance between the various notes. The roasted malts, coffee, chocolate and licorice all blend together seamlessly.

Near black. Smells kind of green. Some beany notes, vegetal and underdeveloped chocolate. Full, meaty impy but underdeveloped malt sugars hurt both body and flavour and the overly hot finish is just out-of-place.

Bottled, thanks kmweaver(?) - sorry my beer stash is messed up... Very black, opaque, small pale brown head. Aroma of chocolate and licorice. Sweet, dense and fruity with full body and thick viscous mouthfeel. Chewy and solid with tar and licorice, molasses and tobacco. Salty tarry finish. All powerful and very correct.

Had the pleasure of sampling this at the 1/27/2008 Pittsburgh ratebeer.com gathering upstairs, Sharp Edge Creekhouse. It will be a long time, if ever I am invited again and I see a spread of bottles like I did there - ever again. I am not good enough for the beers that were that we sampled! For example, how about this beer; the Jolly Roger and it was supplied by Nate. Probably mj will be pissed I got a chance to taste this. Strongish aroma that is roasty by nature. Blackish dark reddish tinge on the edges. Barely any carbonation. Rather strong on the palate with lots of alky character. Over the top, just as it should be with any imperial stout. Overall a perfect example of the style. Hopefully with over 100 ratings my below average enjoyablility will not affect the percentile much.

Bottle shared by Styles. Deep opaque brown-black body, thin, tight, persistent cream head. Aroma of licorice and roasted malts, burnt sugars, and a touch of coffee. Plummy, bready body, with chocolate and grape, finishing with charred, bitter roasted malts. Warming alcohol notes too. Silky smooth and very nice, but the finish is too bitter.
