The Petrus Sour Quad is a limited edition blend of a quadruple and 25% Petrus Aged Pale. The quadruple is a complex, dark, malty beer from 5 different malts. Adding Petrus Aged Pale, pure foeder beer, to the full bodied quadruple creates a refreshing and complex taste.

On tap at BitterCreek. Dark brown/ ruby body with small beige head. Sweetish aroma, some barrel notes, rock candy and stone fruit. Thick, rich, syrupy texture carried the taste. Not a lot of pucker, but more than usual for the style.

Sample @ Lambic and Sour Ale Sunday. Dark brown, beige foam. Nose of caramel, ripe dark fruit, red wine, chocolate. Very well balanced between sweet and sour. Nice and surprising!

New and "special limited edition" ’versnijbier’, an addition to the Petrus range (which already contains a whole array of beer styles), advertized as a blend of "a quad" and Petrus Aged Pale; it remains unclear what the quadrupel is, my rough guess would be an otherwise non-commercial variation on Petrus Winter? Medium thick, tan, stable head over a very dark burgundy bronze beer. Aroma of raisin, figs in brandy, sherry, yoghurt, blackcurrant, gingerbread, cocoa, balsamico, iron, toffee. Fruity flavor, black cherries with sour berry tartness but softly so, fizzy carbo, smooth and full caramelly malt backbone with a nutty edge, tart sherryish effect of the Aged Pale in the finish, bit yoghurty, pleasant toasted edge but something vaguely metallic too, spicy notes, earthy bitterish accent with warming rum-like alcohol and the remainders of the Aged Pale tartness, drying. Petrus Aged Pale, one of Bavik’s most important brews as far as I’m concerned, is clearly responsible for uplifting a quite ordinary, slightly metallic quad here, but admittedly this (altogether) ’cheap’ trick works for me, this came out as an enjoyable, warming sipper with a certain degree of complexity.
