Trappist tradition comes to Manayunk with the first in a series of Belgian inspired ales. This strong, golden colored ale is brewed with pilsner malt and noble hops, but it is our unique Belgian strain of yeast that provides the complex aromas of fruit and spice. With a dry finish and relatively light body, you will find our Belgian Tripel very drinkable for a beer this potent. 10 oz servings only.
L’Chouffe yeast used. Doug’s from Iron Hill’s first beer at Manayunk.

Deep, perfectly hazy golden and light orange coloured body with a very nice, single centimetre tall just off-white head that fades relatively quickly, but shows the haze and beautiful bright orange when held up to a light. Aroma of yeast, bread, light grain, a dose of hay, a funky curacao and coriander seed note that doesn't show freshness, but deep flavours along with a light dose of alcohol, candy sugar and a relatively large bitterness from malt and grain with a hint of hops coming through near the end. Medium-bodied; Deep and robust malt and bready/yeastie notes dominate here with a lot of grass, hay, flowers and assertive medicinal flavours show through with a good dose of alcohol and grain at the end that leaves a tiny bit of sugars coming through with the rich bread finishing it off. Aftertaste shows the robust yeast, grain and malt notes with a lot of bread and bitterness along with a hint of light spices and a sweetness from bananas and corn, but the medicinal and yeast esters come through at the tail end and really show the long-lasting yeast presence. Overall, a deep and relatively balanced tripel with perhaps too much depth and pungency derived from the yeast/bread along with the alcohol/astringent qualities, but there is enough here to make this nice to enjoy, especially as a style that isn't produced nearly enough outside of Belgium. I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 21-November-2018 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington about a year and a half later on 05-April-2020.

12oz can poured into the wacky Engelszell glass. Clear, gets hazy at the end, golden color. Thick, foamy head builds a top and fades into a sticky lacing. Aroma is moderately sweet (Belgian candy), light esters (very restrained banana), lightly airy yeastiness, and dough from the malts. There is an additional interesting fruity sugar light character that’s very appealing. Flavor loses all that ester and has an understandable Belgian sweetness and a strong earthy bitterness. Doesn’t seem like hops. Also, not sticky, big but not BIG. This is the third or fourth time I bough this beer and finally getting to rate it. I think it’s a damn good take for an American brewery.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a hazy orange copper with medium creamy white head that lasts. The aroma is pure sugar, yeast, fruity malt. Medium mouth, similar flavors to nose, very boozy finish, decent.

This was poured into a chalice.
The appearance was a semi-hazy glossy orange color with less than a finger’s worth of white foaminess. Lacing concaves nicely along the sides.
The smell starts off with an iced apple to sweet citrus. Light mango, pineapple opens up once it warms. Belgian spices show their presence nicely.
The taste is well balanced between the spice and the sweet and also leads into the aftertaste nicely. The finish is semi-sweet but barely there.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation seems slightly under, but the spices seem to take care of the slight lack. Belgian sweet stickiness rolls over my tongue.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good Tripel that I would have again.
