Another big stout from the cellar at 8 Wired. Brewed with an irresponsible amount of barley, then aged for a year in Hawke's Bay Merlot barrels. Big roasted flavours rounded out with rich berry notes from the residual wine.

Tap at Hair of the Dog, Phloen Chit, Bangkok. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a lasting frothy light tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, with big woody vinous notes. The flavour is light liquorice bitter with a rich, smooth, dry, roasty, big oaky, light tart red berry fruits, vinous, light boozy alcohol palate. Medium to full bodied with flat carbonation. The Merlot really came through with this beer as did the dry oaky notes. I don’t think I’ve ever had a beer that picked up so much of the characteristics from the barrel. It seems like they added a whole load of wine to this beer plus a ton of oak chips. Either way it worked. I finished the night on this beer and it almost finished me too... but in the nicest possible way!
