Lesse’s dubbel - with a somewhat confusing name, as the ’red’ part of it already made me fear for a sweet kriek or something alike. Pale greyish beige, moussy and lightly lacing but fairly thin head, breaking quickly but retaining well on the edges and in a thin greyish ’veil’ in the middle. Initially clear, fully translucent, deeply burgundy-hued bronze colour, turning cloudy with yeast sediment added in the end. Aroma of caramel, hazelnut paste, damp forest floor and even light FFF, red cabbage with brown sugar, ripe banana, bubblegum, strong soapy coriander seed, sweet almond, pear syrup, white pepper, cooked carrot, cloves, sugar-glazed beetroot, sweet blue plum, honey, stewed apple, dried kitchen herbs. Fruity onset, sweet banana isoamylacetate, candied date and raisin with light stonefruit sourishness, in all quite estery but not in a overly ’messy’ way, notably spritzy carbo (overcarbonated for the style, lightly numbing the sides of the tongue) but only in the beginning, residual brown sugar sweetness cloying a little bit to the teeth; lean, supple malt body, very caramelly and sweet with bready accent, turning into a more bittersweet toastedness towards the end, which is then aided by an earthy, herbal, leafy hop bitterness, so as to ensure a bittering ending; some vague but noticeable, wodka-like, warming alcohol is there in the end but not in an obnoxious way and the malty caramel and brown sugar sweetishness both persist, more or less balanced by the combination of toasted malt bitterness on the one hand and herbal hop bitterness on the other hand, although the sweetness still wins in the end - overall ending bittersweet, an effect strongly reinforced by a very firm dosis of soapy, sticky coriander, the ideal spice to artificially enhance bittersweetness. Not completely flawless: overcarbonated and a tad ’stinky’ in the nose due to this FFF (manure-like) effect. The actual basic flavor pattern is more or less okay I guess: there is, of course, the old familiar brown sugar and caramel sweetness we all know from commercial abbey dubbels made by larger breweries, but in this case the malt and hop bitterness are somewhat more elevated, making for a very slightly more interesting profile. Very slightly that is, because all things considered, this is still a very ’safe’ take on the style and does not really add anything to it - not to mention the fact that it is heavily ’overcoriandered’, a disease we urgently need to get rid of in Belgium. I am not the greatest fan of the dubbel style to begin with and this one is, well, a bit boring, honestly.

Bottle. pours unclear amberbrown and dark. Small white head. Smell is metallic, malty. Taste is better than expected. Full malty, with a mild sharp bitter tone. Yeasty as well. Certainly metallic, but sometimes that’s a flavor that works. Good body , and - i love it - low carbo. Very easy drinkin’ beer .
