Prodigal is an imperial oatmeal milk stout with a massive fudge and roast malt character. It’s a foundation for some of our favorite stouts, now here to stand on its own adorned with only a handful of cacao nibs and Madagascar vanilla beans to round out the edges.

Oily black, viscous pour. Aroma of dark chocolate, cardboard, oats, hint of vanilla and alcohol, brandy. Thick mouthfeel, with rich dark chocolate flavour, supported by moderate sweetness; some espresso notes, a bit too much alcohol, burnt sugar in the final.
I like massive beers, although I don't particularly feel this one. Very good in any case.

Aroma has cocoa tones and licorice. Also some chocolate tones. Flavour has some warming alcohol, chocolate and some slightly salty licorice. Nice slow sipper.

Sample from the bottle at Ruoholahti, Espoo. Color is dark brown with small brownish head. Aromas and flavors: Cacao, dryness, milk chocolate and roasted malts. Very soft and enjoyable.

750ml bottle @ Ruoholahti Beer Festival. Sweetish, earthy and slightly milky with some roastiness, coffee, chocolate and cocoa, hints of toffee. Quite balanced and tasty.

Bottle - Dark cocoa and dark chocolate. Jet brown with a decent brown head. Dark chocolate, fudge and bitter roast with a long bitter sweet chocolate finish.

Dark brown, without much head. Inky. This has almost a smoky note, treacle, with the emphasis on dark sugars. On the palate, fairly rich in character, with a nice burnt sugar note. The vanilla is noticeable and definitely serves to round things out. I have to say, this is pretty tasty.

750mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose is robust, with oats, medium roasted malt, and a touch of cocoa nibs. Flavour is very expressive on the vanilla beans upfront, with moderate roast and hearty oats. Lots of vanilla and a hearty palate. But it gets a bit cloying after a while. Still, very good.

Imperial milk stout by Perennial in Missouri, famous for its Abraxas, among others; 75 cl bottle from De Caigny. Medium thick, yellowish ochre-tinged pale beige, opening but edge-retaining head over a pitch black beer. Aroma of cold black coffee and espresso, walnut oil, ‘fondant’ chocolate, toffee, vanilla beans, liquorice or even salmiak, bourbon, shoe polish, dried prunes, sweet pipe tobacco, rum, hot chocolate sauce. Dried dates, old raisins and a lot of fig in the onset, sweet with a sourish edge, soft carbo, thick and viscous, oily mouthfeel. The added lactose establishes a creamy, velvety effect without completely filling the mouth as is often the case in present-day milk stouts. Delicious toffeeish, caramelly and dark chocolatey malt body with toasty bitter edges, turning more deeply roasted and coffee-like in the finish, accentuated by a dose of peppery hop bitterness; the spiciness of the hops and the roasted bitterness of the malts dominate the finish much more than whatever sweetness the lactose adds, and that is exactly what I was hoping for. The vanilla counters this a bit by adding a delicate, aromatic sweetness. Long, heating, rum-like boozy finish, yet not so boozy that it becomes obnoxious – the alcohol highlights the lingering flavours rather than burning them away, and that to me is a trademark of a top quality imperial stout. This brewery excels at this genre, that much is clear. A great piece of work.
