It’s also known as Steam beer made by fermenting lager yeast at a warmer than normal temperature. Historically steam beer came from Bavaria, Germany. The style was really made popular during the American Gold Rush that brought people to California. San Francisco and other West Coast brewers pioneered the style with what they had available on the frontier. There are Bavarian brewers that make it, but Anchor Brewing Co was the biggest producer of the style. The style almost died out as temperature control technology became available, but it was Anchor Brewing that kept it alive and even helped it thrive again.
Lightly malty aroma with hop notes of delicate flowers and white grapes, light amber color with a soft mouthfeel, low-med carbonation for drinkability and a refreshing finish.

Bottle, 0.5l. Deep amber/copper pour, two finger creamy off-white head, long lasting, good retention. Lots of lacing on the glass. Nice on the nose, bready, malty and herbal notes, caramel, lightly toasted. Light to .edium body, soft carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel and texture, soft and chewy, easily drinkable. Nicely balanced bittersweet taste, more on the sweet side. Malty aroma, toasted caramel, bread, herbs and spices. Subtle ripe fruits in the background. Medium lasting finish, lingering herbal and malty notes, slightly dry. Enjoyable.

Bottle from Pomalo, shared with Rafa, the Brits and BGB ppl. Clear deep amber-red body, off-white head. Bit rough, sharp grainy aroma, mild herbal and grape touches. Creamy taste, heavy, bit rough caramel-grainy taste, sweetish, with the grape-herbal hoppy profile rounding things out. Okay overall, the malt profile just needs work.
