This pale and refreshing lager is a delightful play on Heater Allen’s recipe for a German-style Pilsner, using Willamette Hops for flavor and aroma. One of the original hops developed by Oregon State University and at one point the most wildly grown hop in Oregon, using Willamette Hops pays homage to the fruitfulness of the Willamette Valley in harvest season. A collaboration between Heater Allen and Visit McMinnville to showcase our part of Oregon to the masses.

Can. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has light grass and a slightly dank hat with a bit of straw supporting. Flavor has a nice grass and dank hay with light straw and a bit of citrus rind underlying.

Can from Tavour. Pours brassy gold with a transient white head. Aroma is lightly bready with floral and spice notes. Med body or so. Flavor is bready with spice and floral notes. Fairly towards dry. Spice increases with time. Bitter enough for a pils. Seems like Willamette is similar to Saaz in some ways. Nice, pleasantly drinkable pils.

Odd, heavy and somewhat vegetal for a pils, with notes of citrus and cut grass but also a little chive and lemon, backed up by grain, mushrooms, and a mild briny vein. Interesting, but not something I’d seek out again.
