Barley Wine Dark Aged for 6 months in Mezcal barrels with dark agave syrup, cinnamon and Mexican coffee.
Hops: Columbus, Simcoe. Yeast: US-ale.

As already mentioned on the Cobras Fumadores bottle label, smoking cobras have been an established part of the fauna in Southern Mexico for several hundred yeast. And yes, we DO mean a cobra snake with a huge Cuban cigar in it's mouth. However, exactly how the snakes picked up this unhealthy habit, has been a mystery to herpetologists (snake spotters) ever since this line of science was created. But the mystery doesn't stop here - actually it just keeps expanding. Within the last fifty years a new sort of cobra sighting has started to appear. Coffee workers in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil - more than 5.000 kilometers from Oaxaca, the home of the original smoking cobras - claim that cobras are sighted almost every day in the coffee fields, proudly basking in the sun whit their head raised. To complicate things these coffee snakes seem somewhat different. The majestic Cuban cigar preferred by the Mexican cobras, is substituted by a huge, fat reefer. According to local experts the aroma clearly suggests that the ganja is of local origin. And even more disturbing, the Cobras are also sipping coffee - no half-assed Mexican Café de olla, but good, strong Brazilian coffee. Will there be anything stopping these clever cobras? We fear that there may be many more future chapters to this story...

330mL bottle, pours a cloudy rusted dark red with a small beige head. Aroma reveals a nice marriage between coffee, slighly smoky mezcal barrels, agave, and dark dried fruits. Flavour follows the same lines, with a nice blend of smoky mezcal (perhaps smokier than the nose suggests), tempered by coffee, followed by gentle agave sweetness, and dark fruits. Earthy coffee, with a lingering smokiness from the barrels. I think I marginally prefer this to the non-coffee version. Very good.

Bottle at The Gull, North Vancouver
Amber to dark amber colour, hazy. Had it just after the Cobras Fumadores, it has less smoke, a touch of earthy coffee, and it's less round than Cobras Fumadores.

Bottle. When popping the cap, sitting in my Aalborg hotel room bed, this shite beer decided it was a brilliant idea to burst out of the bottle like a raging genie, splashing all over my thighs and down on the bed linen. This of course made my bed linen look like if I had released a fart that weren't only air and gas, some of the beer ended up on the fluffy carpet, and some on the sink (unfortunately, and very noobish of me), and when using a towel to clean up the mess, it looked like I've used the towel to... well, I guess you get the picture. Gushing aside, the incident left a wonderful aroma in the room, easily overpowering all my body odours, with coffee and brown sugar pulling most of the load. The beer looks a bit dull in the glass, decapitated, with a flat, clear chestnut body, but the aroma is angel dust. Chocolate, some bacon, a touch of vanilla and spices, some boozy notes, a vague licorice hint, some perfume hints and a good toffee scent. It's super-delicious, still I feel there should be more to it. Perhaps it's just the lack of carbonation to propel the aroma, or maybe I'm spoilt, but I'd still like to have more of everything. It's full bodied, sweet, lightly warming and flat on the palate, with very little bitterness. The flavor is close to as complex and wonderful as the aroma, but only close. There's more focus on the caramel, toffee perhaps, with a generous sweetness, some chocolate, a gentle kick from the booze, some vanilla and spice hints, caramel sauce, a very gentle hint of something green, and a super-delicious coffee addition. The finish, it lasts for a couple of eternites, coating the roof of the mouth wth a nice sticky layer of coffee, brown sugar and caramel. Even though the cleaning lady will have a tough day at work tomorrow, I still have to leave a suitable score for this beer, which I find a bit difficult. 4.4 would be fair I think, but given the amount splashed all over my hotel room, 4.2 will have to do. You can do better than this Amager. 190526

Bottle. Pours hazy dark copper brown / ruby with airy off-white head. Clear aroma of malt and yeast, with notes of caramel and touches of smoke. Sweetish flavour of barley wine yeast and malt, with notes of smoke and touches of hops and spice. Smoky and estery aftertaste, with spicy touches. Decent.

330 ml bottle. Pours a very deep dark mahogany with moderate head. Aromas of toffee, spice, mezcal, fresh ground coffee, and sweet malts. Rich flavors of same with a bit less coffee and more emphasis on the Mezcal, though not overly alcoholic and nicely balancing the malty sweetness.
