The city of Cologne on the Rhine River in western Germany is renowned for its “Kölsch” beer. Although it utilizes a top-fermenting ale yeast, Kölsch is fermented relatively cold and further cold-conditioned. The purity law of 1516 outlaws using any wheat in lager beer, but since it’s an ale, Kölsch uses up to 20%. It ends up being very clear and yellow, with a slightly fruity aroma, and a sharp crispness.

Can. Pours clear yellow, medium white frothy head, good lacing. Yeasty, bready aroma, grain and grass. Flavor is light sweet, light plus bitter. Light body. Pretty solid for a Kolsch

16 ounce can from Tavour. Bright, yellow gold pour. Frothy white head. Big bready malt aroma. Flavor is sweet grainy malt. Notes of red apple, pear and lemon peel. Soft and supple mouthfeel. Some herbal hops in the finish. Wonderfully refreshing.

Pint can pours with a crystal clear gold colored body that supports a nice bright white head. The modest aroma offers up some fruity esters, spicy to lightly floral hops and a dash of citrus. The taste delivers same with pear to apple to fig like sweet fruity esters that slide into modest spicy to floral bitter hoppiness. It maintains the sweet esters and mild hop bitterness right into the finish. Decent enough albeit too sweet and estery for the style. But, this is better than most American brewed Kolsch (which isn't a high bar tbh).

Can from Tavour. Pours clear light gold with a nice creamy white head. Aroma is lightly bready with some light grassiness. Arguably med body. Flavor is malty/bready with more grassy nobility than most of the style. Light spice notes in the finish - keeps the mouth a bit tingly. Very nice.

16 ounce can. Pours a crystal clear yellow hue with a large foamy white head. A big fresh malty nose. Light floral elements, bready, soft and crisp, dusty leaves, mild fruity esters. Very clean.
