The MASSIVE! Series is a beloved annual staple of Gigantic. Every year, they introduce a new kind of barrel to the Barleywine base for heightened complexity on the dark elixir. This time around, they used Oaxaca-sourced Mezcal barrels, introducing signature notes of char and tobacco to the malty, rich brew!

Bottle from Kenny. It pours opaque black with a small oily deep brown head. The aroma is sweet, oily, bitter - sweet, cacao nibs, dark chocolate, umami, liquorice, toasted sesame and charred wood. The taste is dry, rich roasted malt, charred wood, umami, slick, oily, spicy, warming, umami, liquorice, warming booze, heady notes of mezcal, charred oak, rocky road, dark chocolate, brownie and warming booze through the finish. Fulsome body and moderate. Lovely stuff overall.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep earthy brown with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has bread and sweet grains with a bit of toffee with a hint of agave underlying. Flavor has a good amount of agave and bread with a bit of sweet grains and light toffee backing.

Bottle from Tavour. Pours dark brown (amber with strong light) with a slight beige/tan head. Aroma of Tequila and medium dark malt. Full bodied. Flavor is smooth, sweet and heat. Light smoke notes. And Tequila. Lots of that. So the malt is rather balanced by the heat. Wood? Yes, but one needs to concentrate. The impact tends to be distractive. Killer ale.

Capped 500 from Tavour. Pours opaque dark brown with a transient darkish tan head that was very slight. Aroma of toffee, wood and tequila. Approaching full bodied. Flavor is toffee, tequila, wood, a little heat, and something suggesting a fruit resembling cherry. Pretty dry, all malt considered. Seems bitter - might be the heat. Somewhat complex and arguably exquisite.
