Bomber from Julios consumed on 1/19/2006. The beer has traces of light sediment on the bottom (we’re talking very light) but still enough to give it a slight haziness towards the bottom of the bottle. At the top, it’s a clear burgundy to copper, with garnet tinges throughout. Mocha colored head is initially large, but rapidly fizzles away to a ring and even that is gone fairly quickly. The aroma is quick to point out the cinnamon and nutmeg, with sharp honey and molasses fermentation notes (seems to always leave a dry, borderline astringent and lightly sour note). Fair amount of breadiness and perhaps a touch of anise. Medium strength. The flavor wastes no time in assailing the palate with too much cinnamon and ginger. Neither full-bodied nor particularly well-textured, the rather watery, loose consistency does not support the full amount of dry, bready malts (stale, white flour biscuits at that) and overspicing. Aside from the breadiness, there’s not much in the way of a doppelbock that is able to get passed the spicing. No alcohol apparency.
