A positive combination of Fuji cider, slow-roasted farro, a bit of cayenne and fresh cilantro.
This beer part of our Music Series of beers... this one is an amalgamation of hip-hop, beer, cider and a DIY culinary experience! Sam and Dan the Automator of Deltron 3030 teamed up to create Positive Contact, based on Dan's favorite ingredients and Dogfish Head's innovative brewing practices.
Named after a key track on the first album, Positive Contact is a 9% ABV hybrid of beer and cider brewed with Fuji apples, roasted farro, a handful of cayenne peppers and a late dose of fresh cilantro. This sweet-and-sour Belgian-ish brew is a light straw color with fruity, cider-like notes. The cayenne and alcohol give it a warming finish.
For the inaugural release (2012), the beer was packaged in a dynamic box set of six 750-ml champagne bottles, with a 10-inch vinyl EP of four new Deltron 3030 remixes created exclusively for this project, and a list of Deltron 3030-inspired recipes from a small group of renowned chefs. Subsequent releases did not include the vinyl or recipes.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 2012. Pours lightly cloudy golden amber color with a nice 2-3 finger dense white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Good soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big grape, apple, pear, pepper, clove, banana, bubblegum, cilantro, herbal, light cayenne, and yeast spiciness. Fantastic aromas with great complexity, balance, and strength. Taste of apple, grape, pear, cilantro, clove, banana, pepper, herbal, earth, grass, bubblegum, wheat, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of light fruit, banana, pepper, clove, herbal, earth, and yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic flavor balance and complexity; with nice complimenting flavors from the herbs and spices. Nothing is overbearing. No cloying flavors at all after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with almost no warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic imperial witbier! Fantastic complexity and balance; and very smooth to sip on. This was very impressive.

Bottle @ Dan’s house, courtesy of Armin. Pours a clear, golden appearance with an off white head. Yeasty, somewhat wheat malty, apple juicy, pear aroma. Mild banana, apple, somewhat estery yeasty, tangy, white apple flavor. Ok but pretty odd. Not sure I could drink much of it.

Pours pale gold into a shaker. Bright white head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing to coat surface. Yeast and yarrow aromas. Soft with sweet fruity yeast, cilantro and bubblegum front to back. More of a wit than a cider - didn’t pick up on many cider qualities.

I tried both the bottle and the draft side by side. The bottle is significantly better though still not great +++ Sampled from a 750 ml brown bottle this beer poured a hazy very pale yellow color with a very large foamy white head that left good lacing. The aroma was tangy and sweetish with notes of apple, pear and band aid. The flavor was tangy and bitter with notes of Juicyfruit gum, citrus, pear, apple, band aid and artificial sugar. Medium length tangy pear and apple finish with lingering Juicyfruit gum and artificial sugar. Light to medium body. The alcohol was well hidden.

Bubblegum and banana nose. Apple beer, or hefeweizen? Crystal clear amber, thick white head, good retention. Medium body, warm. Apple and banana. Ok, now it’s more like a weizenbock. I fully expected this to be a Dogfish Head misfire, but it is actually very good.

A golden wit with a thin off lacing off white head. In aroma, a sweet fruity and spiced up malt with light cloves, raising dough, not bad. In mouth, a sweet banana berry malt with cloves, citrus, ginger, and light alcohol, not bad. On tap at Barcade, July 1, 2012.
