A positive combination of Fuji cider, slow-roasted farro, a bit of cayenne and fresh cilantro.
This beer part of our Music Series of beers... this one is an amalgamation of hip-hop, beer, cider and a DIY culinary experience! Sam and Dan the Automator of Deltron 3030 teamed up to create Positive Contact, based on Dan's favorite ingredients and Dogfish Head's innovative brewing practices.
Named after a key track on the first album, Positive Contact is a 9% ABV hybrid of beer and cider brewed with Fuji apples, roasted farro, a handful of cayenne peppers and a late dose of fresh cilantro. This sweet-and-sour Belgian-ish brew is a light straw color with fruity, cider-like notes. The cayenne and alcohol give it a warming finish.
For the inaugural release (2012), the beer was packaged in a dynamic box set of six 750-ml champagne bottles, with a 10-inch vinyl EP of four new Deltron 3030 remixes created exclusively for this project, and a list of Deltron 3030-inspired recipes from a small group of renowned chefs. Subsequent releases did not include the vinyl or recipes.

750 mL bottle from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a large creamy white head. Good head retention. Aroma of apples, caramel, cayenne, a bit of smoke, faint hops. The taste is caramel malts, apple, cayenne spice, herbal notes, pale malts. Medium bodied, low carbonation, low lingering heat. Interesting.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into DFH snifter. Poured a very clear golden orange, medium fluffy white head, lasting thin white foam on top. Aroma was sweet fruit cider (like red delicious apples) and a touch of yeast. Flavor was a bit underwhelming - light fruits, yeast. Like a cider/hefe. Think I might have been conned into getting this 6 pack +album. I cant even listen to the album except at my folks house. Come on DFH, I want to love you guys! Original rating, 3.1, (Initial Rating Date: 6/30/2012)
Update (6/7/2013): Had the final bottle from the 2012 batch. Wow, this aged well. Mellow alcohol, cider notes, light fruits, touch of spice notes, mellowed. Very enjoyable.

The marketing of this beer is unique, but a little bit silly. I didn’t pay for it. Hazy, blonde. The aroma has cilantro, other herbs, and general craziness. It’s all kind of muddled together in there, going nowhere in particular. More mellow on the palate, light body, with mellow spiciness and then the cilantro comes in late. Not that much cider character - they must have used a lousy one. Although from the description they used their own pressed juice, not cider.

On tap at the Lupulin Reunion 2012 at RFD DC. Pours a transparent, bright orange with one ring of white head. Big herbal nose, coriander, thyme, lavender, yeast, white pepper. Flavor is sweet, orange, candy, herbs, flower pollen, honey, perfume. Full bodied, perfumey finish. Seems like it is much higher in alcohol than it actually is.
