Say goodbye to the brown ales of old and have a taste of this futuristic take on the classic style.

The sweet UK brown ale style was previously appropriated by American home brewers and dosed with New World hops to up the juicy bitterness. We’ve taken that American Brown Ale style and pitched in an Edinburgh yeast to give a silky texture to this malty-rich, hoppy-fresh brown ale.

It’s 6% ABV, so a schooner is delicious, and pairs perfectly with chocolate orange.

Label artwork features an excerpt from Eduardo Paolozzi’s ‘Futurism at Lenabo’, 1964.

Keg at Southern. It pours dark brown with a small light tan head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, toasted pine, resinous, oily orange citrus, toffee, coffee grounds and fruit cake. The taste is bitter-sweet, charred wood, earthy roast, coffee grounds, bit of burnt toffee, resin, citrus peel, brown bread, treacle and some peppery spice with a drying and toasty finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Has plenty going on that's for sure. Pretty tasty. Solid stuff.

Bottle from the Edinburgh Beer Factory shop. Appearance - a kind of caramel orange colour. Big fluffy tan head. Nose - hazelnuts and oatmeal. Chocolate biscuit comes through later. Taste - burnt bread up front, then chocolate biscuits. Some hazelnuts again. The burnt bread comes back on the finish. Palate - medium bodied and creamy. Nice long creamy/crunchy finish. Overall - good example of the style. They haven't relied a lot on the use of hops to take it away from its true style and have pulled off a good one.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Hazy brown body with a thick beige head. Lively carbonation. Good lacing. Aroma of Dr Pepper, earth, red apple and toffee. Flavour of copper, crystallised orange and stewed tea. Medium body with a silky texture. Light fizz. It’s good to see this brewery finally release a new beer; ever since they opened I’ve been hoping to see small-batch releases and collaborations. I really enjoyed this and look forward to the others in the series.
