Can - many thanks to Drake! Pours black with an inch of tan/brown head. Nose is sweet chocolates, caramel, cream, coffee. Flavor is coffee, smoked malt, dry chocolate malt, light ash. hint of sweetness from the lactose at the very end. Nice.

Can pour into pub glass from Friar Tuck, Crestwood. Appearance is opaque black with nice sparkle at the edges of the glass, finger-plus width foamy light brown head with good retention and trace lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate and lactose. Taste is roasted malt, lactose and milder chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium side of light-to-medium bodied with smooth, frothy texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, delivers good aroma and flavor along, without being overly decadent, along with a lighter body, as advertised.

12oz can. I wish lactose beers would indicate that on the label. Whereas a classic Stout would have been a welcome addition to the Surly lineup, this is sort of undesirable. Sweet vanilla, coffee, roast. Just lacks much finesse, and leans into the lactose hard. Drinkable but not that impressive.

12 ounce can from Woodman's Appleton, 10/31/19. Black, large fizzy brown head, about three fingers, good retention. Aroma of roast, dark chocolate, lactose, some nuttiness. Taste is roast, lactose, chocolate, sunflower seeds, plum. Medium bodied, low carb. Solid. Maybe just a tad bit too sweet but there's some bitterness in there.
