Every great city has its wild side, and in 19th century San Francisco, that was the Barbary Coast. From this chaotic cauldron emerged San Francisco’s vibrant jazz culture and a rich legacy of poets, artists, writers, and entertainers. Inspired by this creative tradition, this decadent imperial stout was brewed with oak staves, sea salt, a hint of spicy chili, Dandelion Chocolate’s cacao nibs and Sightglass Coffee. Pair with rich chocolate cake and a flair for adventure!

16 oz can poured into a tulip. Black with tan head. Aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, roasty notes, some hot peppers, a little licorice. Tastes of sweet roasted coffee, milk chocolate, light hot peppers, a little dark chocolate, touch of salt. Medium-full body with a dry and slightly hot peppery finish. Delicious.

Tap at SF Beer Week Opening Gala. Pours black, beige foam. Aroma: Intense roast and coffee, barely anything else. Mocca, chocolate. Heavy, sweet, not boozy, but sticky. Cake Doug. Not overpowered, still delicious. Very nice.

Can from Whole Foods in Davis, CA. Pours dark brn/blk with a transient tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate and dark malt. Rather earthy. Argubably full bodied. Flavor matches aroma - except I got a strong suggestion of graham flour as well. Seems to develop a hint of chili, and then more than a hint. Very tasty stuff.

16 ounce can into snifter, canned on 12/13/2016. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, chili pepper, fudge, toffee, brown sugar, marshmallow, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of smoke, herbal, raisin, salt, and roast/toast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee/spices, and oak notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, chili pepper, fudge, toffee, brown sugar, marshmallow, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of smoke, herbal, raisin, salt, and roast/toast/oak earthiness. Light roast/coffee bitterness and pepper spice on the finish; with lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, chili pepper, fudge, toffee, brown sugar, marshmallow, toasted oak, dark bread, and roast/toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee/spices, and oak flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Lightly drying from bitter/spiciness as well. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and lightly sticky/chalky/grainy mouthfeel that is great. A touch thin, but not an issue. Zero warming alcohol for 10%; with no pepper heat as well. Overall this is an outstanding spiced imperial stout! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, coffee/spices, and oak flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the big ABV. Great presence of pepper flavor with zero heat; with an amazing balance of all other flavors. A highly enjoyable offering.

Can. Pours clear ruby black, small tan head, dissipates quickly, some lacing. Aroma is coffee indeed, mocha and espresso, roasted malts, molasses, ashtray. Flavor is light plus sweet, medium plus bitter, a bit of acidity, mocha. Full body, lingering bitterness.
