Draught at the brewery, 6/30/16.
Nicely clear, maple-mahogany with light auburn tints and a dark beige head atop that shows moderate retention.
Cool to see a darker gose, as they’re almost always light blonde/golden. I think the sunflower seed puree must be the culprit here as it’s not roasty/toasty in the nose otherwise, but there is a nuttiness that you’d expect. Otherwise, light salinity, soft honey and only moderate acidity combine to produce a very gentle nose for a gose, though it’s not low on aromatics or anything. Kind of nice that it’s not just a big shot of kettle-produced lactic acid and actually shows some malt (and adjunct, in this case) depth. Good, bright lactic acid does emerge but it’s mixed about much more homogenously. No alcohol or flaws.
Delicious honey-cream-like maltiness is nicely attenuated but still provides plentiful, soft, malty texture. Tight carbonation and a lingering salinity with light fruitiness (apple, cherry, strawberry) and moderate acidity on the end from the lactic acid. The germinated, roasted, pureed sunflower seeds are absolutely perfect here and bring nuttiness, earthiness and add overall complexity. Very sumptuous, yet still drinkable gose and quite innovative and unique take.
