Draught at Doherty’s, 6/26/16.
Light ebony-to-dark mahogany with a high clarity and large, dark beige head atop showing moderately strong retention.
Dark roasted malts mix with light prune, plum and other dark berry-like notes giving a very strong dark malt/dark fruit element to the nose. Some base malt character adds light vanilla-cream to attempt to balance, while there’s a vague "Belgian" character underneath, which really just comes off as mostly bubble gum and clove. No alcohol or flaw.
Very heavy on the dark fruit, with lots of berry-like acidity mixing with oily, dark roast coffee flavors and bitterness. Some bready notes from the specialty malts as well as a bit of sweet caramel-vanilla to gently balance. Strong carbonation, medium-tight with no alcohol or flaw. Again with the light cotton candy and/or bubble gum. Very Americanized/inelegant on the yeast profile with way too much dark malt/specialty malt character.

So ordered this at Gingerman and when it came thought it must have been mistake. But its a black saison apparently not sure what that means but i’ll list as saison unless an admin wants to change. murky brown pour. nose is coffee and straw. tastes of coffee, chocolate, hoppy, belgian yeast, straw. some florals, and wood, there is a barnyard element to it. smooth palate. odd duck
