Draught at Three Penny, 5/25/17.
Lightly hazy, burnished copper with an off-white head atop showing moderate retention.
Fruity hops and light yeast esters rise up in the nose as a touch of caramel and bread spill out from the specialty malts, but it’s not too disruptive to the hops, which are quite fragrant, spicy and citric. Gets a bit piney and grapefruit heavy towards the end, with light honeycream and sourdough-like notes being formed as the hop and malt notes meld. It’s clean, but dangerously close to resinous and overly citric. No alcohol noted, at least.
Fairly soft and malty in the mouth, with a well-attenuated and supple character as Bunker seems to consistently have. Some definite specialty malt character begins to creep in; brown bread, red fruit and more dry, almost woody character. The hops add a good deal of bitterness, tons of orange and other citrus with a growing pine character that climaxes on the finish adding too much sour hop character and creating a strong sourdough-like character that really fatigues the palate. Wish they would have relaxed on the boil hops quite significantly here.
