Our curiosity continues with an intensely kettle and dry-hopped double IPA primarily featuring Simcoe and Nelson. The base of Thirty-One is straightforward to allow the unique and intriguing combination of Simcoe Nelson to shine! We experience flavors and aromas of clementine, red grapefruit, and orange peel offset by a subtle sauvignon blanc note. Our house yeast provides a familiar character provides a familiar character and plays beautifully with this wonderful and expressive combination of hops. Despite its focused and intense flavors, this Curiosity drinks easily and finishes quite softly. A good companion for winter, indeed.

Canned 2/28/17, drunk 3/22/17.
Bright golden-bronze with light soup qualities though not fully turbid. Off-white head atop is large but fades steadily to cover.
Tangerine, cherry and white wine in the very dry nose supported by biscuity, very lightly caramel-tinged malts and hints of watermelon and bubble gum from the yeast. No twang/resin, even given the simcoe, so I’m impressed on that account. Very leafy, dry, dank and spicy.
In the mouth it’s a bit more juicy, with pineapple, papaya, melon and tangerine. Nelson manifests lightly on the finish. Texture is soft and malty with light cracker and a very strong dryness. A touch more honey-like malt would help soften this thing up, but it doesn’t come off bitter or boozy in spite of it. Tangerine, spicy, dank notes and dry pineapple lingering.

Pours a very hazy, brownish-yellow, with smallish head. Aroma of tropical fruit is quite strong on this one, along with notes of citrus and hops. Flavor is very tropical and sweet upfront. I was reminded of Juicy Fruit gum on my first taste. There’s some mango and pineapple in there, along with citrus, some dry white wine, and intensely bitter spruce/pine hops in the finish. Very interesting and quite tasty beer. Keep ’em coming!
