Draught at the brewery, 3/22/17.
Light copper-amber with brass and gold hues, a high clarity and beige head atop that shows moderate retention.
Light bread, biscuit and pepper in the nose with a touch of apple and banana fruitiness. A bit less malt than expected with lots of lemon and grass (not lemongrass) on the finish. Lots of grain character, nicely varied and interesting with no alcohol or flaw.
In the mouth it’s very well-attenuated with tart lemon notes, black pepper and crunchy grains supported by a tight carbonation. Some very delicate honey-like sweetness with a hint of breadiness on the finish. Not your typical BdG or BdM, though I suppose there are some lighter, saison-like examples. It’s crazy this thing is as high of an abv as it is; it certainly doesn’t come across that way at all.

Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a semi-rugged looking maybe muddied copper to brown color with a cap of a white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Slight strings of lace.
The aroma had some semi-sweet grassy hops toying with a nice earthy malt base. Some juicy citrusy hops back the rest of it fairly nice. Then some lemon with a slight white to black pepper sort of flow underneath.
The flavor seems to yield to the blend of the grassy sweet to bitter hoppiness flowing into the earthy malt. Pepper blend is nice and adequate to flow nicely on into the aftertaste and on into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair grip of the malts pummeling the spice enough to glide along my tongue. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, pretty good Biere de Garde in my opinion and worthy of having again.
