A 100% Brett-fermented ale aged in chardonnay barrels. This is the first beer to come out of our budding barrel program, so we wanted to make sure it was a funky one. Astral Weeks spent five months in chardonnay barrels before being bottled, which led to a medley of fruity, funky, and oaky flavors. This is a beer meant to be sipped, savored, and pondered over. Named after the transcendental works of Van Morrison. Tasting Notes: Funk, Grape Must, Pear

Draught at the brewery, 2/12/17.
Lightly hazy, drab brass with a very light pale-copper tint. Light beige head atop is small and wispy.
This thing smells like a whole slew of odd things. There’s definitely some sweaty feet, old cheese, lots of musty cellar and other incredibly funky things but thankfully there is enjoyable Brett with light band aid, hints of rubber band and lots of lime and lemon. Malts behind it seem quite well-attenuated, adding white bread, honey and light dough. Don’t get too much barrel character, though there’s a bit of oakiness to it on the end, after warming. No alcohol noted.
Soft and oaky in the mouth with bread, dough, light sugary notes and lemony-tart Brett notes. Funky basement notes on the finish but there’s much less oddity to the flavor. Carbonation is low but engaging, with pretty good attenuation, sticky malt and tannin and no alcohol or flaw. Maybe a touch too much acidity from the Brett but it’s a minor complaint.

[2/1/17] Draught at Lamplighter Brewing Company in Cambridge. Cloudy yellow. Great funky aroma with oak, fruitiness. Dry flavor, mildly tart, with oak, fruitiness, and a slightly bitterish finish. Very nice.
