French Pils
Spawned out of a research project by our former Tap Room Manager, @iamnotafembot, Bière D'Alsace is inspired by the French Pils from the Alsace region of France. An area that lies on Germany's Southwestern Border. While this proximity to Germany undoubtedly had a large influence on the region's brewing culture, technically and raw material-wise, the Alsatians also cooked with non-traditional ingredients such as corn, which was typically frowned upon by German brewers. The Alsatians truly made their own style of Pils that, while referencing its German influence, is not a derivative.
Cereal mash, double decocted, hopped with Strisselspalt, open-fermented, spunded, and lagered forever. Bière D'Alsace - French Pils is uniquely earthy, fruity, and slightly hoppy with a dry finish. One sip, and you'll understand why 60% of beer consumed in France is brewed in Alsace.

Canned 5/4/22, drunk 5/27/22. Dark bronze-brass. Clear. Off-white head showing moderate retention. Soft, honey and powdered sugar with herbal, earthy hop notes and light mineral from the yeast. Clean. In the mouth it's soft and malty, pretty decently attenuated though sweeter than your average German or Czech-style pils. True to the style it's got that annoying powdered sugar, or marshmallow if you will, malt flavor that makes most of the French pilsners I've had seem pretty cheap and gives lagers a bad name. That said, this seems pretty intentional here - maybe it's just the yeast even. Whatever the case, it's not great, other than being true to style. Some decent herbal/earthy hop bitterness does help balance. Otherwise, very clean, richly-malted and well-done.

Can at home. Nose is bready and some fruits. Tastes of cereal, bread, florals, kiwi, lemongrass. Medium chewy palate. Interesting euro hops.

Pours slightly hazed gold into an English pint. Bright white head with little retention recedes to skim surface. Crackers, biscuit and sourdough aromas. Soft with sweet meadow, marshmallow and sourdough upfront turning to mildly tart apricot before he lasting earthy root finish.
