A variation of a classic Bock bier, this strong German lager is brewed with Beechwood smoked malt, Dark Munich malt, and specialty roasted malts. At 6.4% abv, our Rauch Bock is a dark copper color with a moderate smoky aroma and flavor that melds with flavors of caramel, toffee, and toasted bread. Double decocted, naturally carbonated, and lagered forever.

Brighton draught, 4/5/23. Clear, deep brass-copper. Beige head is small, well-retained. A bit subdued at first, in the nose. Some very deep, dry, woodsmoke, earth and cellar must. Not getting much in the way of rich maltiness for being double decocted. Some fruity melanoidins, peppered, cured smoked fish lingering. Sweeter malt up front. Base malts adding honey and graham cracker. Smoke but kind of vague. Fruity, extremely so. Bready finish, a bit too much so. Heavy, heavy sourdough character builds on the end. Bitter, some alcohol, too much sourdough. Didn't seem great from the nose and just went downhill from there. Strange. It's not infected but something seems very odd here. Kind of a thin texture at points, too. Maybe some sort of hot side aeration issues that are slowly emerging?

Pours deep mahogany into a willi. Tan micro head with excellent retention recedes leaving trailing spiders. Dark caramel, bacon and light smoke aromas. Soft with bacon and smoked sausage upfront turning to sweet dark caramel before the lasting earthy campfire toast finish. Nice.
