Düsseldorf style Altbier: A copper colored ale that feels like a lager. Sweet vanilla balances earthy snappy bitterness with rounded notes of dark crusty bread and caramel. Single decoction, open fermented, extended cold lagering time, natural carbonation. The Düsseldorf style of Altbier tends to display more bitterness and less sweetness than other German Altbier.

Brighton draught, 1/4/23. Clear amber. Large, light beige head is well retained. Papery kolsch yeast, pepper and herbs from hops and soft mineral and hints of toasted malt. Very clean and snappy. Red fruit, toasted caramel and light brown bread. Pepper lingering long. Kolsch yeast (pencil, paper, pepper). I don't love medium specialty malts, as they get in the way of hops and yeast without much payoff (heavily toasted bread and caramel...yum....). But it's well-made.

Thought I had prior so passed by several times but alas she is now mine. Cloudy chestnut brew and fine sized foamy head. Nose is caramel and pumpernickel. Tastes similar with some dried leaf litter, and raisins. Medium bodied.

Pours deep hazy caramel into a stein. Tan head with good retention recedes leaving trailing sheets. Caramel and malt aromas. Soft with dark caramel and treacle upfront turning to pumpernickel and dark sourdough in the lasting finish.
