Sweetwater Blue is a unique lighter style ale enhanced with a hint of fresh blueberry. When you drink this beer take a good whiff first and you’ll smell the blueberry influence, but on the taste it’s extremely subtle and the finish is extra clean. Ain’t no fruit beer, but it is our breakfast beer, usually folks that are looking to quench their thirst or for those that are new to the “good beer” lifestyle; this is their choice. This brew and the ESB were the original two to go through the tanks at SweetWater in February 1997.

Drank right out of the bottle. Not much fruit in the smell but the first swig is unsweetened blueberries, I think. Yes, typical fruit beer sensations on the palate. Not sweet at all, just unsweetened blueberry Kool aid. Yes, fairly typical fruit beer, nothing special going on here except maybe a little blueberry. Should I say it seems to be a tad artificial, even tho it says fresh blueberries? Well, probably not. Looks like any other pale beer.

Well as a blueberry wheat, there’s very little in the way of redeeming qualities by its nature but I was fairly impressed with this brewery’s take on a style of beer that I’ve had at many brewpubs and are always garbage. Bright blueberry nose on a golden beer, modest head. Light clean palate with a bit of blueberry and a bit of wheaty, semi-citrusy zestiness. A touch sweet and grainy at its worst, clean, refreshing and well-constructed at best.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear light gold with a white head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has a full blueberry note that seems to be quite sweet with backing sweet bread notes. Flavor begins full of blueberries as well that are sweet with the same sweet grains and bread backing.

Enjoyed on tap at the Sweetwater ATL airport bar in Atlanta, GA while waiting for a delayed flight. Appearance is a light gold with no head at all. Aroma of blueberries, light hay, bit of yeast. Taste goes down lightly bitter, blueberry finish which is lightly refreshing, taste is decent. This was just OK.

I can respect that Sweetwater Blue doesn’t bash you in the teeth with cloying, artificial blueberry madness like most blueberry ales, but still, it is what it is. Sweetwater Blue is a great beer for your mom or buddy who doesn’t like craft stuff, a beer that will blow away people who drink flavorless swill, yet will cause you to receive massive shit if one of your beer snob buddies spots you drinking one. Not bad, boring, and I guarantee one day you’ll be happy to see this bottle listed when perusing an otherwise horrid beer menu.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a light orange with a thin fizzy head. The aroma is blueberry muffins, with some light notes of pine and hay. The flavor is sweet, lightly tart and just a little bitter bitter. Light to medium body, crisp, and lightly carbonated. This is a light and very approachable beer. The blueberries are present, but not overwhelming.
