Milford Sound, dually known as Piopiotahi, is a respite at the edge of endless tides. These calm waters are encompassed by sheer cliffs acting as a barrier between the tumultuous jungle, where life proliferates and blooms before being taken back into the folds of its verdant keeper. Nature laid before an undistracted mind mirrors back hidden mechanics, uncloaking archetypes sleeping in the tangled din of these wild landscapes.

Milford Sound is our newest foray into wine barrel aged lagers, accentuating the cross section between oak, grape and hops. Ruby Bay takes a secondary conditioning period in Sauvignon Blanc barrels where it achieves a stunning clarity and mellow tannin notes from its wooden vessel. Peacharine, Riwaka and Nelson intermingle with the bright stone fruit of Sauvignon Blanc, creating a liquid akin in its dryness to that of a mixed fermentation. Milford Sound is a labor of love that is at once approachable and endlessly complex.

Pours a lightly hazy, lemon yellow, with smallish head. Aroma is grass, malt, hops, some woodiness. Flavor has all of these, with a mild sweetness underlying. Clean, crisp mouthfeel. Very tasty and nice departure from the usual.

Autumn canning, 4 pack drunk over a month, most recently on 10/29/23. Clear, bright brass-lemon. Small, white head, moderate retention. Light tropical fruit, rich, honey-like malts. Lots of mineral, crisp yeast, very minor wood. Clean, fruity, fun. Soft but with pleasing tannin from barrel and gentle graininess to balance the rich, but well-attenuated honey-like Pils malt. The sauv blanc character is fruity and yet dry, complementing the malt perfectly. Soft, comforting, pillowy malt on the finish with zesty stone fruit, tropical fruit, mineral and crisp yeast. Ample but not overdone bitterness.
