A traditional smoked lager modeled after the smoked beers of Bamberg using rauch (smoked) malt. Beechwood smoke is used to dry the barley during malting, resulting in a smoky aroma and hint of smoke in the flavor. Single decocted, spunded and lagered forever. The Black Lodge is the perfect balance between the malt and smoke with medium hop bitterness and a clean lager fermentation character.

Brighton draught, 3/21/24. Dark amber, clear. Small, beige head, quickly to light cover. Oh yeah, pretty full-on Schlenkerla smokiness with rich, malt-sweetened bacon and plentiful brown sugar, light salt and lingering char. Clean and very aromatic. Wow that's a lot of flavor for 4.5...Malty, with great attenuation and tons of brown sugar-glazed ham. But the smoke tapers into crusty bread and a fair bit of peppery dryness. Malt lingering alongside sweet, balanced ham.

Tap at the Brighton pub. Black with a low head. Huge nose of brown sugar-cured bacon, savory with sweet chocolate notes. Rather sweet and also very savory flavor with lots of bacon and medium smoke. A rather interesting rauch, sweeter and more savory than expected, so quite unique.

Pours mahogany tinged deep brown into a willi. Tan micro head with good retention recedes to skim surface. Dark caramel and smoke aromas. Thin and soft with sweet caramel and light smoky bacon front to back. Dry, lasting campfire finish. Delicate and well made.
