Notes: For Pitch Lined Pils we employed traditional Czech brewing methods of double decoction, open fermentation, natural carbonation, and extended lagering times (four months) in pitch lined wooden lagering barrels in our Salem brewery.

PITCH LINED PILS is back! We first introduced Pitch Lined Pils in 2019, and over the last two years have been working to scale up the pitch production process.

Our head brewer Chris traveled to Bavaria a few times over the last year to oversee new lager barrel fabrication for Notch, in addition to sourcing new pitch. We now have enough wooden beer barrels (and pitch!) to lager multiple batches of beer, and this means a more frequent supply of multiple styles.

Scroll through the photos to see a bit of the brewery action. We’ll be repitching barrels soon and will include a bit of that process as well.

What is PITCH and why does this matter? Hang tight, we’ll post again on the history of pitch line barrels, its prominence in the brewing industry, and how pitch influences the beer flavor, as well as protects the beer from wood contact. Or come to the release on August 2nd, as our brewers will talk pitch until you get bored.

Pitch Lined Pils is draft only, either from pitch line Holzfaß or Lukr pours, exclusively in Salem and Brighton. No cans, no to go, no distribution, you must come visit us!

Pours slightly hazed gold into a stein. Bright white head with excellent retention does not recede. Smoked apple and earthy multigrain aromas. Medium bodied with tart lemon, apple and sweet sourdough front to back. Lasting slightly toasted bready finish.

Brighton release Lukr (the gravity cask didn't carbonate), 8/2/24. Clear brass-golden-maize. Large, creamy, white head slowly falls to light cover. Minerally yeast character/hard water. Gently fruity, freshly-cut grass hop character adds complexity. Dough, biscuit and honey from the malt, very clean. Moderately aromatic. Almost juicy with a round bread dough character from the malt, lightly sweet. Appley character, light, from the yeast. Some bitterness, herbaceous, up front but very little hop character otherwise. Clean. This is solid but unspectacular. Bit overly doughy/bready and more apple from the yeast than I'd like. But it's malty, dry, clean, very drinkable.
