Made famous by the breweries of San Francisco and often referred to as a Steam Beer, California Common is a West Coast amber ale fermented with a lager yeast. Caramel maltiness harmonises with fruity hop characteristics to create a medium level of bitterness and a smooth finish.

Cask at the White Hart, Sherington. Pours dark gold with a small head. Aroma is bready, slightly acrid. Taste has bready malt to start a sweet hoppy mango finish.

Cask shared with rlgk, fonefan and beerhunter111. Clear golden color, average sized white head. Smell and taste malts, hay, light caramel, lightly grainy, a slight buttery hint, lightly bitter. Rather earthy dry finish. Average body, low to average carbonation. Meh.

Cask. Klare goldene Farbe, geringe weiße schaumkrone. Geruch mild zitronig hopfig, minimal säuerlich. Geschmack mild zitronig hopfig, helles malz, uninteressant.

Nice bitterness but way too earthy for the style. More spicey hop note. Some ok lagering in there but needs some work.

On cask at the Haymarket. Appearance - golden amber with a creamy head. Nose - pale malt and light honey. Taste - more honey nut cornflakes. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Just avoids being astringent. Overall - a solid common.

Cask at the Abbot Cook, Reading. A bright amber pour with a ring of white head; apple aroma; taste of apple and honey, with a tart bitterness; and a dry biscuit finish. Not bad, but didn’t really remind me of a Steam Beer.
