Tap. Pours deep clear black, small tab head, decent lacing. Aroma is light roasty, a bit of tobacco, rubber, burned malts. Flavor is light sweet, quite bitter, lots of ashtray and rubber, malts are burned leaving a lot of bitterness, some acidity. Medium plus body.

Sample at GABF 10/04/2014, thanks to my BIL for assistance with note-taking. Brownish-black color with a medium khaki head that recedes steadily. Short strings of lace. Aroma of roast malt, coffee and hops. Medium to full body with flavors of roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee. The finish is roasty with a malt aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

4 oz draft at Device Brewing. Black with tan head. Aromas of vanilla, chocolate, roast. Tastes of bitter roast, dark chocolate, bready notes. Medium body with a dry finish. Thin oily mouthfeel. Interesting idea to use English ale yeast but it doesn’t work for me in a RIS.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours black with a tan head. Aromas of chocolate and perhaps coffee. Med + body. Flavors of smooth dark malt, dark fruits, a little treacle, and I think coffee. It’s very tasty. More than most.
