De laatste Haarlemse brouwerijen, die begin 1900 nog actief waren, brouwden allen een extra stout. Jopen heeft deze bierstijl nieuw leven ingeblazen. De Nederlandse stout bevat tussen de 5 en 6% alcohol.

On keg at Jopenkerk Haarlem - Black body, with creamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, a bit sweet, milky chocolate, leather. Taste begins is quite bitter, with lots of coffee, less chocolate, roasted malts. Bitter on the aftertaste too with good duration. Average carbonation, medium thin body, very dry on the palate. Overall a decent stout. Favourite of the night to this point.

Nitro cask @ De Arendsnest. Aroma has toffee typical to English ales. Also some hay and hints of licorice. Flavour has English toffee, licorice and some ashy tones. Smooth and somewhat creamy palate. Feels slightly watery on some sips. Like a light version of Fuller’s London Porter.

330ml bottle [as "Hans Klaver", part of the Bekenesserkerk series]. Darkest brown colour with thick, frothy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, off-white to beige head. Dark malty aroma with an odd, somehow perfumed nuttily touch, some green wood. Taste is initially dry dark malty, minimally roasty, later slightly fruity with subtle sweetness, hints of red berries and raisins, a nuttily touch, hazelnut pellicle, green wood; dry finish, slightly prickling carbonation.

Tap tasted on 03/05/2014. The colour is excellent but the head is not creamy enough for a stout. The aroma and the taste is nice with chocolate, roasted malts, coffee and light caramel. Perhaps the carbonation is a little higher. Next one please!

Flaske fra Voldby Købmadsgård, på Sigmunds hytte, april-14: flott filmskum. Deilig aroma av svarte bær. Lett syrlig smak med fin og tørr avslutning. Helhetsinntrykket er helt ok uten at den imponerer. Lettdrikkelig stout.

Shared 300 ml bottle at local tasting, from Voldby Købmandsgaard. BB date 9.Nov 13. ABV is 5.5%. Black colour, tan head. Malty aroma, notes of molasses, only mild roasty notes with hints of mild coffee, chocolate and dark dried fruits. The flavour is not very sweet, and here the roasty notes of coffee are more distinct. Some hops in the finish. A quite decent stout.

Extra Stout on Nitro @ Arendsnest. Pours nicely black. Aroma is quite sour, a bit like a vomit. Relatively velvety body, but not very strong. Flows nicely, great drinkability. Aftertaste is not overly long nor overly strong. Weak body.
