2018 Bottle, wrapped fully in brown Burlap, just as pictured. Deep, slightly hazy copper and bronze coloured body with a nice two centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of light hops, a touch of grass, some floral and very perfumey notes along with a dose of grain and a finish of pure honey sweetness. Medium-bodied; Assertive grassy and very perfumey notes that show interesting hop profiles without anything pungent, resinous or citrusey, seemingly having those ranges absent entirely from this beer, but the sweetness and very grainy finish make this beer fairly one-dimensional in that respect. Aftertaste shows the slightly bitter flavours from the perfume without much else - the sweetness from caster sugar and honey show as well, but there is no hop punch or complexity at all. Overall, this is my first beer from Ruhstaller, and from the bottle and products available in the store - I was expecting much more. This was weak in almost all respects and seemingly just a ploy in marketing (with the burlap bag) and not enough goes into the craft of making the beer - which is kind of the most important part! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased a few hours ago from BevMo! in Vacaville, California on 10-March-2019 for US$10,99, sampled in my hotel room here in Vacaville, California on 10-March-2019.

I have enjoyed both of their other beers, but this one was very disjointed. Aroma of ketchup, belgian yeast, perhaps some sour funk going on here -- it tastes intentional, but is not part of the beer description, so i am uncertain. Hops are very muted, although some grass comes out as it warms. Not a whole lot going on here that i liked. A surprising result as both other beers are very tasty.

"California Ivanhoe Organic Whole Hops 8% AAU. 4.6% Beta. The original California Cluster variety has been rejuvenated for the first time in more than a half century. Similar in profile to a Cascade with a moderate alpha in the 8% range, it has a nice aroma with mellow hints of citrus and pine and the strong floral/herbal notes typical of English aroma hops. The exact origins of the Ivanhoe hop are unknown but the original California Cluster hop parent was a cross between English and American varieties. Great for American style ales, California Common, stouts, and IPA’s. Try in recipes that call for: Galena, Cluster, Northern Brewer." Bomber from The Davis Beer Shop. Pours light copper amber with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is fruity floral over some light malt. There’s a musty aspect. Call it full bodied. It is floral/fruity, but there’s a musty/earthy component so strong this could be taken for a farmhouse ale. It’s fairly lush in the mouth. I suppose there’s grass and citrus, but my mouth is finding enough flavors to not bother with that possibility very much. This is eminently quaffable.
