THE DEFENDER is constantly vigilant, standing guard over all those who dare to drink great beer. This bright, juicy, West Coast-style IPA takes on a reddish twist from a dash of roasted malt. Bold, fruity hop bitterness and an intensely resinous nose lead the way into a dry finish that blazes the trail for your next sip.
Who is this masked hero? The Defender emerged in an era when gloomy walls and bland beer held our city in a stranglehold. Slowly, murals began to brighten the landscape and flavorful beer flooded the taps. Today the city is alive with fiery art and delicious beer. The Defender maintains constant vigilance to battle back the blandness lurking around the edges. Ours is a world of light, fury, and song. This is it’s Defender!
Brooklyn Defender IPA was forged in collaboration with our sidekicks at New York Comic Con as the official beer of the convention.
Malts: Pilsner, Crisp, Carared, Crystal
Hops: Pilgrim, Willamette, Cascade, Mosaic, Amarillo

Nice and deeply hazy amber and bright copper coloured body with a thinnish, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of dank, resinous hops along with some pineapple, guava, passionfruit and other tropical fruits and some nice malt elements as well. Medium-bodied; Assertive grass and tropical fruits up front with not much malt support and only a touch of hay and grain on the finish, fairly mild. Aftertaste is relatively uninspiring with the tropical fruits around, but not front and centre, whereas the water and dry grass is more prominent. Overall, not very complex, but the nose and look of this one is very nice. Still, very nice to sample given that this isn’t available in every store around the world, like I assumed it was! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in New York (Columbus Circle), New York on 27-November-2015 for US$2,99 sampled at home in Washington on 14-March-2016.

Serious toejam smell with potpourri underneath. Cloudy ochre, thin head. Bubble gum, dried leaves, orange peel. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Perfumey. Kind of a strange beer. The hop bill is a bit at odds with itself, and it’s generally unpleasant.

Bottle: Pours clear, red-copper with a small off-white head. BIG piney aroma. Taste is almost sweet, caramel malt, tropical....resin....peppery. One of the best IPA’s I’ve had the pleasure of drinking in a while.

Bot. So, its 2016 and this must be the 2016 version, hehehhheh. Big strong permeating pine tar aroma. Strong bitter pine tar and spruce taste bud impact. Darker than most IPA. I would say in my humble opinion this is more like a impy ipa, heheh. Big strong nasty chewing on green grapefruit rinds and pine tar this is. Yes, flavorful, flavor over the top. Call flavo flave, he’ll like this because the clock on the front of my chest is spinning around like crazy. That smell is just as thick and rich as the taste of the terribly on style thick viscous bitter juice inside. Pungent aroma is there till the end, it never stops letting yah know its a rude rude rude IPA. WTF? This ass kicken beer is large ands in charge!

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark caramel-brown color with a small foamy beige head that left good lacing. The aroma was piney, citric and cactusy. The flavor was very sweet with notes of pine, citrus, cactus, caramel, yeast and moderate bitterness. long finish. Full body. Solid.
