Barrel-aged Imperial Witbier with Wine Grapes

The official beer of SAVOR 2018

Situated on opposite sides of the country, Crux Fermentation Project and Port City Brewing Company have long admired one another’s work from afar. When the opportunity arose to collaborate, they decided to brew a beer that showcases each brewery’s strengths while paying homage to their shared oenological roots. Using a higher gravity version of Port City’s flagship wit as the foundation, the brewers crushed a healthy amount of Pinot Noir and Viognier grapes into the hopback before the beer was “banished” into red wine barrels with Crux’s house strains of Brettanomyces. Brett de Vinum is a collaboration in the truest sense of the word.

750ml bottle pours a hazy orange with some clumpy, white head. Nose has a little poop, butter, Curacao orange, perfume. Flavor is better but mild, orange, perfume, white grape. Finishes medium bodied. Very forgettable.

750ml bottle at the DC Spring RB Tasting. Acquired at SAVOR 2018. Poured a pale yellow, with a medium sized, long lasting white head. Aroma was woody barrel, some wine, floral character. Bretty, earthy funky yeast notes come through, some light dusty fruit, grape in particular. I actually kind of liked this one.

What was the plan here? Not sure. Barrel and not much else. You don't barrel aged a witbier. Some florals. Light sweet end. Bottle thanks to radagast

From Savor 2018, indeed how could it be otherwise: pours hazy gooden yellow with a white head. Aroma is wine and brett. Taste is slightly bretty, earthy. There is some wine with a sort of nice dry finish. Overall, quite good.

RateBeer rating #9000! 750 ml waxed and corked bottle acquired from SAVOR 2018's Saturday night session. Clear golden yellow with off-white head. Aromas of Brett, earthy notes, a little herb, oak, wine. Tastes of grapes, wine, citrus, light floral, malt, light tartness, a little apple. Medium body with a dry finish. Really nice.
