Grandma's Boy was one of the very first beers we aged in oak at Bellwoods, and its (almost) yearly release is one that garners much excitement. This year we decided to switch things up and share the unfruited version, in all its sour/funky/crisp glory -- and named it, simply, Grandma.

The absence of fruit allows for more subtle flavours to shine through, showcasing the perfect intersection of acid, brett, oak, and a crisp, spritzy body.

500mL bottle, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma seems like there's peaches and other stone fruit in there, with rustic saison yeast, and some bugginess. Flavour is complex, with a really nice bugginess, rustic saison yeast, some jammy stone fruit, and dry oak. Buggy, jammy, dry, rustic and oaky finish. Excellent.

(500ml bottle from the Ossington bottleshop) Pours fairly clear bright yellow-gold with a thick head of white froth and lace. Notes of crisp cereal base with quite light lactic tartness, grassy herbal hops, dusty dry hay sort of Brett quality, some soft tree fruit (apple/pear) sweetness, citrus accents and an off-dry start that finishes bone-dry, slightly yeasty with a subtle neutral wood drydown reminiscent of some sparkling wine. Light to medium body with smooth filling bottle conditioned carbonation. No particular bells and whistles here but nice balance of components.

Bottle: Poured a yellow color ale with a large pure white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of tart notes with light funky ester is quite enticing. Taste is a good mix of sour notes, subtle oak notes with some funky ester and minimal acidity. Body is full with good carbonation. Very drinkable sour with right amount of complexity.
