refers to one of Lister’s favourite haunts in the East End which was, for centuries, the hub of London Docklands. It was home to the River Porters after whom the drink was named. It’s a traditional Porter, dark in colour, with hints of coffee and molasses. It’s surprisingly light and makes for easy drinking.

Cask at Lych Gate, Wolverhampton. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a medium sized cream head and good lacing. The aroma has roast malts, nuts and a hint of bacon. In the mouth it is sweet and smooth with a fruity texture, a little bitterness creeps in later on. Flavour is mainly roasted malts but with some blackberries and lime coming through to lead to a sweet finish. This is quite nice, but perhaps a little on the sweet side for me.

Cask at PoW, Farnborough. Aroma is creamy and chocolatey with a berry edge. Opaque cola brown. Thin frothy tan head. Sour berry streak dominates the flavour. Underlying charcoal and coffee bitterness. Creamy hints. Medium bodied. Creamy mouthfeel. Flat-average carbonation. Long dry finish. Nice enough Porter.

Cask at Wellington Arms, half pint shared with Finn. Jet black body, bubbly ring to the rim of the glass, clingy lacing. Plain roasted malty nose. Rounded black malty flavours containing chocolate and dark dough. Smoothly roasted endnotes. Slightly thin on the swallow, otherwise quite fine. (Bedford 18.11.2021).

16th Oct 2018. Hand-pulled cask pint in The Cock Hotel, Wellington Shropshire. Black body, tanned crown of tight foam. Roasted malty molasses rule the nose and flavour of this easy drinking Porter, mild coffee and chocolate notes in both the aroma and taste, decent.
