Nice black pour from a bottle. Gentle metallic malt aroma. Yes, some mild licorice in there but it blends ok with the porter thang. Decent creamy sizzle that just barely makes the grade. Good body and it does seem to get just a little near the top towards yer face. .

Bottle from Foods Plus, Plaistow NH. Aroma is strong anise. Appearance is dark red--almost black, slightly hazy with minimal off-white head with good staying power. Taste is subtle up front with a stronger, pleasant slightly bitter finish with slightly sweet anise flavor for balance. Palate is medium bodied, creamy, though slightly thin texture for the style, with a bit too much carbonation that dominates the tongue--best to let it sit for a bit. Finish as taste and felt at the back teeth. Overall, an OK beer that could be more interesting.

Pours deep mahogany into an English pint. Off-white head with good retention recedes leaving scant sheets. Sweet chocolate, licorice and pit fruit aromas. Dry and thin with sweet dark caramel and licorice upfront turning to bitter earth in the medium length finish.

Poured into a plactic cup from a bottle at The Wells Fargo Center before a Philadelphia Flyers game. The aroma is anise, weak chocolate and weak roast.

Taste is what you would expect. Anise is the dominate flavor with the chocolate and roast the only other flavors. The carbonation is low with a thinner body. Well, I didn’t have to buy a sample pack to get it, so that is a plus. Not much going on here.

Purchased at Jewel in the form of a winter mix 12 pack, enjoyed at home after coming home from work for the holidays. Appearance is pitch black, moderate consistency, rich off white/tan head. Aroma is chocolate, cocoa, spice, light caramel, with emphasis on spice. Taste is just OK, definitely tastes like an English porter, which I’m not a big fan of, with a bit of spice added. Not too much of a fan for this one.

Stolen from office: Pours dark brown with quickly dissipating head. Aroma is chocolate and anise. Taste has some anise hints in there, but it is mostly chocolate. Weird metallic taste at the finish right after the anise hits. Meh.

12 ounce bottle from the winter sampler. Pours near black with a large foamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of anise, chocolate and a bit of roast. The taste is licorice, roast, mild chocolate. Thin-medium bodied, moderate carbonation, decent balance.
