Epochal x Newbarns Wee Heavy.
Expanding upon the work Gareth does at @epochalbrewery in Glasgow, we decided to collaborate on a historic Scottish recipe for a Twelve-Guinea Ale from Fowler’s brewery in Prestonpans, East Lothian from the year 1862. This beer, which became the archetype for the Wee Heavy style, was brewed with 100% Scottish Extra Pale malt, mashed incredibly thick, with a short boil, and heavily hopped to ensure historical accuracy. Dark amber in colour, rich with flavours of treacle, and with a distinct lasting bitterness, this is one of the most distinct and ridiculous beers either brewery has produced.

Bottle form Luvians, St Andrews. it pours slightly hazy deep chestnut brown with a khaki head. The aroma is oily, sticky, rich maltage, toffee, malt loaf, fizzy cola bottles, raisin, sultana, fruit loaf, rich, toasty and unctuous. The taste is slick, thick, oily, unctuous, bitter - sweet, chewy, toothy, toasty brown sugars, toffee, malt loaf, brown bread, dried fruits, toasted fruit loaf, gummy cola bottles, some warming booze, nip of spice and dry leathery oak with a slick, brown sugar finale. Fulsome body, average carbonation and oily mouth feel. Rich and unctuous. A fun sipper, but it is pretty heavy duty stuff.

Bottles from Against The Grain and The Beerhive. Lightly hazed amber/ruby body with a thin beige head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of Skittles, strawberry laces, cigar and caramel. Flavours of honey, prune and syrup with a lovely boozy warmth on the finish. Medium to full body with a slick, almost chewy mouthfeel. Soft fizz. This is sweet and stunning; an early contender for beer of the year. Tried it twice and loved it both times.
