Our Head Brewer Nic Donald brews this beer using the exact same method as making an IPA. The chocolate and black malts are then added during the ‘sparge’, which is the process during brewing which separates the sugars from the grain. The beer then takes on some of the roasted and darker malt character you would normally find in a dark beer, mixed with the big hop (in this case Simcoe and Columbus) flavour you find in an IPA. The best of both worlds if you will!

Cask at Four Thieves. Presume it's this with another name (I forget but will check). Low down aroma. Camp Coffee? Dark and glossy. Off white head, marred by being blotchy. Had to take a few swings to home in on the taste - very light bitterness with coffee and an almost herbal edge. Medium bodied but light. Average carb. Pretty abrupt finish. Could down it in one. Not unpleasant but not what you expect from a Black IPA. Weak.

Cask (handpump) @ Four Thieves, 51 Lavender Gardens, Battersea, Greater London, England SW11 1DJ. [ As Laine’s Black I.P.A.].Clear dark red brown colour with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, moderate hoppy, flowewrs, citrus, fruity hops. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average duration, roasted, dark malt, fruity, medium dry. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft to flat. [20150805] 7-3-6-3-13

Cask at the four thrives. Clear mahogany brown reddy coloured pour with a lasting light tan head . loose. Aroma is jammy fruit, pine needles, earthy roast, light resin. Flavour is composed of pine needles, roast, watery, earthy cocoa. Palate, is thin and watery, mild to low carbonation . light jammy fruit and bitter black choc. OK.

Cask at the brewpub , 22/09/15. Light black with a decent tan covering that retains well. Nose is light pine, liquorice, charr, bitter tropical notes. Taste comprises earthy hops, cocoa powder, charr, liquorice, toffee, light tea leaf linger. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok.

Cask at Four Thieves. It pours darkest brown with a decent light tan head. The nose is earthy roast, charred wood, stewed orange, peach, liquorice, chocolate and sacher torte. The taste is bitter, earthy roast, charred stuff, liquorice, some acidity, citrus peel, apricot and berry with a lingering bitter, charred finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Decent.

Handpulled cask at Four Thieves in Battersea. Three versions available; one with pineapple, one cherry infused and one with different hops. My rating is based on the last one. Shared with Stefan. Clear rosewood coloured body. Shiny naked surface. Minimal lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, liquorce and pine. Roased dark malty flavours, hints of dark fruits and liquorice. Malt-fruity endnotes. Medium bodied. Approved (London 12.07.2015).
