A hazy and hoppy modern Barley Wine leaning towards the American version of the style, generously hopped with El Dorado, Calypso, Citra and Mosaic.
Pale orange with a dense white foam; sweet, jammy fruit jumps from the glass along with intense floral notes and a solid structure of toffee and malted cereal. Smooth and syrup-y sweet - melon, mango, passion fruit - with a full, clean bitterness maintaining balance and drinkability. The ‘wise king’ of beers. A beer to savour; a beer for a special day.

Can. Hazy orange beer, decent pale tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry, decent fine carbonation. Light dry caramel and cream malts, fine, but a bit boxy! What does boxy mean? Perhaps a little wet cardboard, but mostly just a gut reaction. Very ripe fruits on the back end, borderline fermenting. Light and fairly dry finish. Okay. But, not a single element here has anything in common with any great barleywine I can recall..a slightly savoury and mildly spicy finish. At best immature at worst, quite naive.

Pours quite pale for a barley wine, a cloudy golden colour with a very thick white collar on it. Smell has a mix of fruit and a big malty hit. Flavour has tropical fruit, sweet malt, behind the sharp fruitiness there's a bit of an oaty smoothness, maybe? Big punchy sweetness, eased off by the malt and the cereal. A bit sharper than you might expect from a barley wine but it's big and warming all the same despite the tropical fruit. I really like what Simple Things have done with this one.

Can from Against The Grain. Murky peachy-brown body with a thick off-white head. No visible carbonation. Good lacing. Aroma of nectarine, dried mango and green banana. Flavour lemon, plum and honey. Medium body with a smooth texture. Light fizz. It’s not the prettiest beer, and it’s lacking the depth and sweetness I love in barley wines. It’s ok, but for me it’s a confusing beer.

Can from Appellation Wines. Appearance - cloudy orange with a big foamy white head. Nose - orange peel going into marmalade. Light caramel or toffee. Some wood spice. Taste - more of the dried orange and sweet spice. Toffee and bread underneath. Palate - medium to full bodied, initially sweet but it cleans up a little more than a typical beer of this style. Overall - interesting, a barley wine with just enough hop bitterness to make it ridiculously drinkable at 8.4%. A winner.
