Black Isle and Poppels from Sweden collaborated a year or so ago to make a fantastic imperial stout called Systems Theory. Since then the beer has been maturing in whisky barrels and is now ready to make a reappearance.
There are two versions – a West coast version (using Islay barrels which gives a peaty flavour) and an East coast version which has oak, vanilla and dark chocolate notes.

Sampled at BXL festival. Black with light brown head. Roast, toffee, port, lots of chocolate, soft vanilla, green hops, light earthy. Quite sweet and bitter. Almost full bodied with oily feel.

Clear dark brown to black beer, small creamy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: nice roast, cocoa powder, ashes, some camp fire, soy sauce, nice one! MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: bit sweet, caramel, soft roast, chocolate, bit malty, soft acidity, hoppy bitter finish.

Keg at Salt Horse. It pours darkest brown to black with a small tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, quite soft, sweet, dark chocolate, chocolate torte, fruity character, toffee, rocky road and fruit & nut chocolate bar. The taste is dry, bitter, rich roasted malt, boozy warmth, charred wood, leather, tannin, oaky, earth, dark chocolate, leather, burnt toast, fruity whisky, plum, date and spice. Medium to full body and fine carbonation. Pretty nice overall. Has a better body than some of their previous BA stouts. Not too shabby.
