Black Isle and Poppels from Sweden collaborated a year or so ago to make a fantastic imperial stout called Systems Theory. Since then the beer has been maturing in whisky barrels and is now ready to make a reappearance.
There are two versions – a West coast version (using Islay barrels which gives a peaty flavour) and an East coast version which has oak, vanilla and dark chocolate notes.

black with a kaki head. aroma is maly, chocolate, sweet wet malts, whisky, licht peat. taste of chocolate, cacao, malty, powdery, lightly sour, roasted malts, soft whisky, peat is nice, could be firmer BA. --- Beer merged from original tick of Systems Theory - East Coast Edition on 13 Oct 2018 at 22:23 - Score: 7. Original review text: Lorre zegt het is ok, gebrand, cacao, chocolade, lichte turf, whisky zacht, maar vind de steviger geturfde eigenlijk wat lekkerder.

Keg at the Black Isle taproom. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, faint whisky. Taste is rich, smooth dark chocolate, coffee again, pipe tobacco. Long finish. Mmmm...

Bottle @ Van Moll Brewpub. Shared with Teun. Opaque pitch black color, small to average sized beige to light brown head. Aroma and flavor is malts, dark and roasted malts though quite moderate, as in "mellowed down", roasted malt light earthy notes, decent to medium malt bitter. Slight liquorice hint as well. All flavors though add something to the beer. Medium body and decent to medium carbonation. Very well done.

Black beer, light brown head. A sweet-ish whisky and malt aroma. Flavour is a bit drier and sharper. Scotch, malt, dark chocolate, some coffee. A bit of woodiness. A good, solid barrel aged stout that I could drink more of than the strength would ultimately allow!

Sample @ BXL BeerFest 2018, shared with Belgian RB crew, thanks.
