Black Isle and Poppels from Sweden collaborated a year or so ago to make a fantastic imperial stout called Systems Theory. Since then the beer has been maturing in whisky barrels and is now ready to make a reappearance.
There are two versions – a West coast version (using Islay barrels which gives a peaty flavour) and an East coast version which has oak, vanilla and dark chocolate notes.

A dense tan head over a black body. Nose features chocolate, roasted malt, wood shavings and vanilla. A very dry initial taste includes oak, a touch of booze, dark chocolate, roasted malt and coffee. Secondary notes include chalk, vanilla, dark berries, and some molasses. Dry to the finish! Medium body and a slight slickness.

Bottle from the lcbo. Jet black pour, with a large beige head. Dark roasted malts, burnt coffee, soft whiskey, earthy wood, light spice and fruit. Oily mouth feel, nice. Carb. Finish is medium bitter, leaning towards high. Intense roast in the end, lots of whiskey barrel, light vanilla, and spice.
